Tidewater Community College Skilled Trades Academy is closed indefinitely to the public as of yesterday due to the coronavirus.  Therefore, we will be postponing the Qualifed Trainer Conference scheduled for March 26-27 until further notice.  All other VARP events are tentatively going to be held as scheduled.  We will keep you posted on any changes.  Thank you.

VARP will host a two-day, NRCA Qualified Trainer Conference, on March 26-27, 2020 at Tidewater Community College Skilled Trades Academy.  This ‘train the trainer’ conference is designed to develop NRCA Qualified Trainers to help new roofing contractor employees become productive and contributing members of the team as quickly as possible.

There is a huge need in the market for roofing contractors to attract new workers into the industry. However, many coming into the industry have little skill or knowledge about roofing or roof installation. At the Qualified Trainer Conference, NRCA will offer a variety of training techniques, and provide participants with a variety of training tools they can take back to their company and use whenever a new hire walks through the door. The ability to effectively train employees is key to recruiting and retaining quality team members so VARP is pleased to be able to host this important training opportunity locally.

The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days and participants will learn how to:

    • Give interesting and engaging presentations
    • Ask the right type of questions to foster learning
    • Create a simple and effective hands-on training environment on jobsites
    • Conduct positive one-on-one training sessions
    • Implement NRCA’s Training for Roof Application Careers program for onboarding new hires
    • Write training objectives and stick to them
    • Keep trainees engaged
    • Conduct practical training exercises to get a new hire productive quickly

As a special incentive, NRCA is offering its award-winning, web-based, TRAC training resource at a 50% discount (that’s a $750 savings), to any company who sends an employee to one of the Qualified Trainer Conferences.  “We find that when companies use the TRAC resource and the Qualified Trainer Program, they are better able to retain new employees that they worked so hard to find and hire,” said Jared Ribble, NRCA’s director of the Qualified Trainer and ProCertification Programs. Class description

By participating in an NRCA Qualified Trainer Conference, you will gain practical, how-to training skills while becoming a recognized NRCA Qualified Trainer. New trainers will gain a strong foundation in critical training skills, and seasoned trainers will be introduced to best practices for delivering powerful workforce improvement presentations and effective hands-on training.

Participants will learn about how NRCA ProCertification works, including its goals, policies and procedures, and the Job Task Analysis skills required of installers for receiving a certification(s) through NRCA ProCertification. In addition, the conference includes assessments of participants' hands-on coaching abilities, presentation skills and training knowledge. NRCA Qualified Trainers will be uniquely suited to coach roofing company employees from the beginning of their careers all the way through certification.

According to Ribble, the Qualified Trainer sessions held so far have been both very well attended and very successful. Below are a few participant comments:

“It’s amazing how much I learned.  If you are really trying to retain your employees, you need to come to this conference and get it done.” – B. Conroy

“I can honestly say this class was probably the most impactful training I've ever had and I'm looking forward to going out and leading other young men.” – J. Ramsey

“The course overall has given me new insight on how to keep trainees more engaged and involved”. – J. Mellick

    Pre-conference webinar

Before participating in an NRCA Qualified Trainer Conference, participants are encouraged to engage in a webinar addressing classroom presentation skills. Following webinar completion, each participant will be assigned a topic he or she will prepare and present during the Qualified Trainer Conference. Participant presentations are rated as a performance assessment; it is required to successfully complete the course to become an NRCA Qualified Trainer.
